SOCRATES LIVES!

1st Hour

Socrates, Britannica, https://www.britannica.com/biography/Socrates, 13 May 2022

The Assembly of Athens (students, parents, grandparents, and teachers) met at the Royal Stoa in the agora to decide the fate of Socrates, the philosopher and teacher.  In each of the four trials, the Jury found him innocent of all charges! The students' speeches and questions provoked much thought, and they passionately argued their points of view.

MOCK TRIAL OF SOCRATES

PRESENTED BY WCS 8TH GRADERS

THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2022

IN THE MPR

Save the Date!

PARENTS ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE AS JURORS IN THE

399 BCE TRIAL OF SOCRATES

Eighth-grade parents, grandparents, and friends are invited to join the Assembly of Athens on April 14 in the MPR. The 399 BCE trial of Socrates will be re-enacted by the eighth-graders, and their guests may participate as jurors by casting their votes for guilt or innocence.  The accusers have charged Socrates with “corrupting the youth of Athens” and “undermining their religious beliefs.”  Socrates faces death by hemlock if found guilty.  In their carefully crafted chitons and himations, the speakers will use the research they have done from Plato’s ApologyCrito, and Phaedo, as well as other sources, to sway the jury to their side.  Other students will record the proceedings as the jurors question each speaker about the hidden issues behind their charges.
