For FUN and FACTS!

EGYPT IN THE I-LAB!

  • Students used Tinkerlab to design their obelisks,
  • then used the 3-D printer to make small models.
  • Afterward, they used ratio to make larger cardboard obelisks to decorate the entrance to the Ancient History classroom.

  • Not only did they learn about design, but
  • they used Egyptian hieroglyphics to put an important word on their obelisk in relief
  • they did a little research about Egyptian obelisks as well.
  • Did you know we have an ancient Egyptian obelisk in the United States?
  • Ask an 8th Grade Ancient History scholar to tell you where it is!

Ancient Egypt

The students are taking over!  Teachers beware!

Eighth Grade Ancient History Scholars are entering the mysterious and complex world of ancient Egypt.  They will hone their research skills as they explore individual topics, and will work with Mr. Geher in the I-Lab to create hands-on projects.

Their skills focus for this project will include:
   1) practicing taking notes in one's own words,
   2) citing sources with superscript numbers and correct end note information,
   3) properly documenting sources on their endnote and bibliography pages
   4) practice using google power search and using specific criteria for evaluating web sources.

The eighth grade scholars will each create a power point on their research topic which they will use to teach their classmates. NO TEACHERS NEEDED!  OH MY!

CUNEIFORM! (on Tech Fast Day!)

Creating Cuneiform Clay Tablets and Cylinder Seals

FOR OUR ALL-SCHOOL TECH FAST DAY
We decided to go way, way, way no tech, to the earliest known form of writing, CUNEIFORM from the Sumerian Civilization.
After examining a replica of a Babylonian school boy's practice tablet, the students created their own cuneiform tablet or cylinder seal. They used the earliest known complete alphabet system, called the Ugaritic alphabet, adopted and adapted from the ancient Sumerians. The 8th grade ancient history scholars used these fourteenth century BCE symbols to write a message about Mesopotamia on clay. They then translated another scribe's work.  Ask an eighth grader why it was like reading license plates! They are not ready to give up their laptops.

Babylonian Law

Hammurabi's Law Code

The Law Court of Babylon
Murder, Theft, Incompetence, Lack of Respect...
After committing the crimes described in the Law Code of Hammurabi, the ancient history scholars had to face the judgment and harsh punishments imposed by the Court! Ask an 8th grade Ancient History Scholar what two big problems Hammurabi was trying to solve with these laws, which are the origin of "An eye for an eye..."
