PARENTS WERE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE AS JURORS
IN THE 399 BCE TRIAL OF SOCRATES
Eighth-grade parents, grandparents, and friends are invited to join the Assembly of Athens as jurors on April 16 in the MPR. The 399 BCE trial of Socrates was re-enacted by the eighth-graders, and their guests participated by casting their votes.  The accusers charged Socrates with “corrupting the youth of Athens” and “undermining their religious beliefs.”  Socrates faced death by hemlock if found guilty.  In their carefully crafted chitons and himations the speakers used the research they had done from Plato’s ApologyCrito, and Phaedo, as well as other sources, to sway the jury to their side.  Other students did research and wrote specific questions of each character, as well as recorded the proceedings as the jurors determined the hidden issues behind the charges.
PARENTS, GRANDPARENTS, AND TEACHERS HELPED DECIDE THE FATE OF SOCRATES IN THIS LANDMARK CASE!

SOCRATES LIVES!
SOCRATES WAS FOUND INNOCENT IN 4 OUT OF 5 TRIALS.
INSTEAD OF THE DEATH PENALTY, HE WAS CHARGED WITH A FINE OF
30 MINAE IN THE ONE TRIAL WHICH FOUND HIM GUILTY!

A special thank you to Deanna Ternes for organizing a fabulous Mediterranean Feast for the students, and all of the parents and grandparents who helped!
